Our Diaries of Learning

Our Diaries of Learning

Dear Parents,
You may like to take a look at the back
of your child's spelling notebook.

We have started a new activity.
Each day students are going to acknowledge at least one
of the
significant pieces of learning that they have acquired that day.

This task will enable children to identify their own learning and will
also inform you about some of the things your child is learning at school.

We are striving to become independent, self motivated learners.
For students to have a clear understanding of their
learning direction, what they are learning and
why they are learning it will help to drive that.

Taranaki Blowout Mosaic

Room 2 created a Taranaki Blowout mural using the mosaic style of art.
Here is our fantastic mural.

We are very proud of it.  Isn't it awesome!

Reports

We are learning about writing reports.

We looked at the structure of a report (see Writing Fun Website).

                                                                     A report has:
                                                         * A heading
                                                         * An introduction
                                                         * Body of text, which includes
                                                             -Subheadings
                                                             -Detail/Supportive information
                                                             -Facts/Data
                                                         * A conclusion

We then viewed the various examples of reports given.

The children were asked to find some order to the 6 samples, identifying elements of a report in the samples and deciding what made one sample better written than another.

In the next couple of days Miss White asked us to identify some headings that may be included in a report on a species.

We came up with:
*Group/Name (Classification)
*Features
*Habitat
*Environment
*Predators
*Food

Miss White informed us that we were going to write our first report on a species very well known to us all
-  The human species.
In fact, our first reports were going to be written about ourselves.
And it should be a great report because we already knew all of the information we would need for our report.

Here are some of our reports.

Inference

Our focus in reading at the moment is:
Inference

***Inference is a good guess (based on logic, statistics etc.)

Groups have been closely reading texts with the intention of
'being like a detective' and identifying clues.

They have looked at inferencing paragraphs of texts, comic strips, and images.
Here are some of them, and written below is what we inferred from each one.

That he often stretches the truth or is not
completely truthful in telling his stories.

That summer is coming.  That the heat will attract flies.

That sometimes its not always a bad thing to not be first.
You can learn and improve on others' ideas.

The family locked the house and
piled into the car, making sure that
they had put the umbrella
and towels into the boot.

That the family was travelling to the beach.

There were leaves and branches
lying all over the backyard.
That there had been a storm/hurricane.

games t

Weblists and Livebinders

We have found out about some great new tools.
Weblists and LiveBinders (Thanks Mr Bradley)

Using this tool we can collate similar pages together for quick access when required.

Miss White has used Weblists to collate:
*Interactive fractions/decimals and percentages based games - View here
*Inference related activities and interactive games. - View here
*Taranaki Blowout related sites (for our Term 4 school-wide topic of study) - View here

View Room 2's Weblists and LiveBinder folders
to the right under the heading Favourite Sites.

Taranaki Blowout - Volcanic Eruption

Our Term 4 topic of study is:

We are taking part in a fictional event (volcanic eruption) run by the Taranaki Civil Defence
Emergency Management Group in partnership with New Zealand Red Cross
and with input from GNS Science.

The fictional scenario unfolding on these pages is based on advice from volcanologists and other experts.  Find out what you can do right now to be ready for the day when our hypothetical event becomes a reality.

Follow this link to Room 2's Taranaki Blowout Weblist to read about
volcanic eruptions from various bookmarked sites.

* why they happen,
* what to do if an event occurs, and
* how to cope after an event by following this link.
