Artist Study - Henri Rousseau

During Term 3 we are studying various artists and
the style of artwork that they are known for.

Our most recent artists is:  Henri Rousseau

Below are the common elements that we found
between the three of his artworks above.

Our next step is to consider these elements in order to produce a
piece of our own art that is created in Henri Rousseau's style of artistry.

Yeast Experiment

Experimenting with Yeast
Today we experimented to see what reaction happened
when we added warm water and sugar to yeast.

Here is a PhotoStory showing what we did and what happened.

We discussed this reaction to determine what type of reaction it was.

Tanae correctly ascertained that it is a Chemical Reaction because:
* It is an irreversible reaction
*The reaction produces a new product (carbon dioxide gas)

Mentos and Coke Reaction

Today's chemical experiment explored the reaction between Mentos and Coke.

We found a clear area where it would not matter if we made a bit of a mess.
Then we added a tube of Peppermint Mentos to a 1.5 Litre bottle coke.
(We had to do this very quickly as the reaction is instantaneous!)
The coke very quickly spurted out of the bottle like a fountain.

Photographer: Kalina

(As you can see Miss White dropped a couple of Mentos as
she was not quite fast enough getting them in the bottle.)

Apparently the greater the amount of Coke the better,
and the Mint Mentos create the biggest reaction.

The reaction actually occurs due to the rough coating of the Mint Mentos lollies.
The dips in the coating enable bubbles to form (watch the video
below to see a demonstration of this) and quickly multiply in number.
The Fruit Mentos have a thin, smooth wax coating around them which prevents
bubbles from forming on the lolly's surface as they did with the Mint Mentos.

Mythbusters explains this reaction in the YouTube video found below (or at this link.)

On Monday 23rd August in Mexico City a
World Record was broken for the most Mentos and Coke fountains in one go.

Watch the video below to view this world record taking place.

Procedural Writing

For the past few week we have
been learning about procedural writing.

A procedure is a step-by-step guide to direct the reader through a task.
They show the "how to's" for completing a task or process.
Procedures are action oriented.
They outline steps to take, and the order in which they need to be taken.

Below are some of the procedures that Room 2 students wrote for...

Types of Changes/Reactions

We have been learning which

is occurring in our investigations.

We learnt that...

A physical change is reversible (for example, the freezing of water) and no new substance is formed.

**Reversible means that the reaction/change can be reversed

and that...

A chemical change is irreversible (for example, the burning of wood is a chemical change - you can't 'unburn' it) and it results in the formation of one or more new substances; ash, carbon dioxide, etc.

**Irreversible means that it is impossible to reverse the reaction/change.

and also that...

A 'fair test' is one in which you only change one thing (variable).
Variables are all the things that could change during an investigation.

Strike - Percussion Group

Week 4, Term 3
On Tuesday morning we had Strike visit.
Strike perform using percussion instruments.
They were fantastic.

Hi It's Laura here, Room 2's new class vice president. I'm so exsited to be vice president. We have been doing so much interesting work.  This term has been a great term. As Kieran said we have been doing a lot of cool experiments. This term we have been looking at chemical and physical reactions. The most interesting one I reckon was the coke and mentos one. Thankyou for reading this piece of writing. Thats all I have to say for now see ya later.

This Term we have been studying different artists.
We have recently focused on Paul Klee.
Paul Klee was often found to have used shapes and lines within his work.
He liked bright bold colours.  He is known for creating the well-known artform Scriffitto.

Here are some examples of his work of art.

View some of the artworks students from Room 2 created using Paul Klee's style.

Richie McCaw visits Raurimu School

Read here about the pupils of Raurimu Avenue School and what happened
as they unveiled their life size paper mache of Richie McCaw.

What a fantastic surprise!

Dye and Pencil Art

During Term 2 we used the media dye and pencil to explore shading.
We sketched compilations of 3 or more objects, and considered shading of these objects.

We had to look very carefully for where light was coming from, where it was
hitting our objects and where the light was not getting to.

Once we had sketched our compilations we then used our knowledge
of shading to create an attractive boarder for our artwork, using dye.

Here are some of the pieces of artwork that were
produced during this topic of study.
